Change Management

Have you had an initiative fail or sputter?  You probably had a strong plan, a competent team, and clear direction.  So why did people fight it, undermine it, or just not play?  Because changes require both strong technical plans and a process to bring the people along.  Using the study of change management, Jo Mattoon Associates helps you succeed on the people front of change initiatives.

Workplace Assessments

You know in your gut something is not working in a workgroup.  You wonder if it is a problem with the structure of the group, the result of disgruntled employees, or perhaps a leadership issue.  We offer an assessment process which gets to the heart of the issue and provides concrete recommendations for improvement.  To truly create a great workplace, it is crucial to understand what is working well and what needs improvement.

Project Execution

In an era of doing more with less, you simply do not have the time to manage all the projects which need to be completed.  We offer complete project execution services – from developing the strategy, to communicating with key stakeholders, to managing the day-to-day details, to project evaluation.  Let us help you complete your most important projects.

Strategic Consulting

Your work has both functional and strategic aspects.  Your typical day is often consumed by the on-going work that must be done.  Often, the strategic aspects of the work are stuck on the sidelines.  Let us help you think about and implement strong, strategic initiatives.  With a long record of visionary leadership, we have the experience and talent to help you fulfill your organizational strategy.

I’m a middle manager, which basically means I communicate unpopular things up and down the org chart. At some point I was struggling in this role and I was STRONGLY encouraged to pursue coaching. It was not my idea, and although I wasn’t completely closed to the idea, I did not pop out of bed on the morning of my first coaching session screaming “oh boy!” either. In my mind I was picturing Jo with a list titled “You Suck in Following Ways”, but it wasn’t like that. It was a clarification of my values, of my goals, and how I saw my future. She praised my strengths (which was something I really needed at the time). She let me vent  and talk about how unfair this all was, (before nicely asking if I was done whining now and how did I want to move forward?). She called me on my stuff, because there were, in fact some things I could do …

She called me on my stuff, because there were, in fact some things I could do better. When things were at their worst and I was considering leaving my job or committing a felony assault, she was on my side for however I felt my future should go. We identified and discussed what the real problems were, (some of it was me, some of it was my work place, some of it was my relationships etc). I found myself leaving each session feeling heard, validated, sometimes challenged, and most importantly, with a plan to move forward.

It has been over a year since I started coaching with Jo. I am no longer strongly encouraged to go coaching, my job is no longer in crisis. My relationships with my staff and supervisors are stronger. I am a better boss, I went from being made to go to coaching to negotiating coaching as part of my training budget. I choose to go coaching because jo is a valuable resource. We all have our days when we are in a meeting strangling the ink out of a pen pretending that it is someone’s neck, when someone we work with forgot to bring their intelligence to work that day/week/month/ year. When you have these days you can go home and tell your friends and family, but the advice you’ll get is “you should quit that job/punch them in the mouth” you can go to a coworker, but then you are siloing and creating an unhealthy work dynamic. Or you can go to Jo. She creates a safe space to discuss the crazy work dynamic, if your job is in crisis, you can work to minimize the harm that can cause. If your work life is war it is having a five star general on your side. However, no one wants war, we spend so much of our lives at the office, shouldn’t it be rewarding? Coaching with Jo  helped get me there, and meeting with her keeps me there.

I looked to Jo Mattoon and Associates to coach me through a challenging time in my professional life. We set measurable goals that gave me a specific preview of what my success would look like at the end of the process.  During each meeting, we had an open dialog which led to strategic problem solving towards positive outcomes.  I applied our strategies to my situation and it revealed that major changes were needed. Through these truths, I found  that my professional life was severely lacking a work-life-balance. Jo worked with me step-by-step in supporting the process of change and growth. With her coaching, I successfully navigated through a career changing experience which has opened many amazing opportunities for me. I’m the happiest I have ever been and will never sacrifice my work-life-balance again. Thank you Jo Mattoon and Associates!

Recreation Professional

I have to admit that when I first started leadership coaching with Jo, I was a bit nervous about the process.  However, after the first session my nervousness quickly disappeared and I started to look forward to our sessions.  Jo always took the time to stay current and focused on the specifics of what was happening in my life and work.  She not only gave me strategies for changing my old habits, but constructively challenged my preconceptions so that I would see the value and productiveness of new approaches to my work.  Jo was just as open to change as she expected me to be, and if certain approaches did not fit my strengths, she worked with me to develop new ones that did.  I will always value her insight and personal attention.
